The Cullman County Board of Education approved five public works projects totaling more than $78,000 at its Monday meeting.
The bulk of those were two canopies at Good Hope High School where a re-roofing project is currently under way. Each will cost $19,721 from Tennessee Valley Metals of Birmingham.
Another $38,000 will be spent with Star Fire Equipment Service Company of Holly Pond on emergency and exit lights and recharging fire extinguishers on all the system’s campuses.
The board approved changes to the re-roofing projects at the Good Hope and Hanceville, adding $22,000 to the cost.
Teacher Brenda Ring of Fairview Elementary was recognized for achieving certification by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, considered one of the highest authorities in the field. Certification is a year-long process involving a written test and a portfolio including video of classroom teaching. In Alabama, all nationally certified teachers receive a $5,000 annual salary increase.
Students Madysen Dailey, Welti Elementary, and Tia Nall, Hanceville Middle, were honored for their achievements in the National School Bus Safety Poster Contest, and Peyton Presto, a Good Hope Elementary student, was recognized for placing second in the state in the Hoar Construction-GMAC Bowl Reading and Writing Contest.
Board member Randy Hasenbein received a plaque from Superintendent Nancy Horton and the other board members commemorating his service to the school system.
“I certainly appreciate this,” Hasenbein said. “It’s been a pleasure to serve with such a fine, illustrious board.”
In other business, the board:
• Approved two out-of-state field trips. West Point High School’s senior football players and cheerleaders will travel to the Peach Bowl Dec. 30 in Atlanta, and Hanceville High School’s marching band will travel to Orlando to perform in the Island of Adventure STARS Parade April 27-30.
• Approved a request from the Fairview Softball Booster Club to place lights on the softball field at Fairview High School. The cost will be paid by the booster club or the school, Horton said.
