Vinemont’s JV boys’ team needed overtime to knock off West Point Saturday afternoon 64-63.
The Eagles’ Dustin Jernigan intercepted an inbounds pass and proceeded to connect on an old-fashioned 3-point play to account for the winning points.
West Point had a chacne to tie, but the Warriors only netted a two-point shot from Cody Brunkenhoefer as time expired to set the final one-point margin.
The Eagles forced overtime at 54-all by scoring the final five points of the fourth quarter.
Vinemont led for most of the opening half with a 12-6 advantage following the first quarter and 30-14 at intermission.
But the Warriors opened the third frame with a 10-2 run and trailed 41-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
West Point dominated the final frame by outscoring their opponents 24-13 in the final frame, but were not able to hold on for the victory.
The victory was not all sweet for Vinemont as junior Joey Pace was lost during the game with a knee injury. Pace is supposed to get evaluated by doctors on Monday according to his mother.
Vinemont was led in points by T.J. Pope with 17 points, Kyle Johnson with 14, Cameron Smith with 13, Jernigan with nine, Pace and Cody Copeland with three and Wes Webb with one.
West Point was led by Kaleb Tilley with 18 points while Garrett Smith and Austin Preiss chipped in 14 and 11, respectively. Stuart Miller tossed in 10 points and Chris Coggins added seven.
