Last-minute dramatics led to the second win by the Vinemont Eagles over county-rival West Point Warriors in just eight days. Vinemont took the game 96-92 in overtime Saturday.

Joe Bryan had a career night, shooting for a phenomenal 41 points in the win for the Eagles. Teammate Jay Hembree had 31 points, 16 being scored in the third period, while Bryan was forced to sit out the third quarter in foul trouble.

In girls’ action, West Point did not dominate the Lady Eagles like in the first meeting, when the Lady Warriors piled on 96 points, but still won the game in big fashion with a 68-37 decision.

Vinemont 96, West Point 92 OT (boys): For those who chose to sit at home on Saturday evening, what was missed was a great game that matched up two quality teams from the Cullman County area.

“Right now the county is wide-open,” said Vinemont coach Bobby Meyer. “The county is so balanced. Any team in the county has a shot.”

Things did not look so fortuitous and glorious to start the game, as an enthusiastic West Point team jumped out to an early 18-0 lead with 4:49 left in the first quarter. Chase Mosley had eight points in the quarter, leading the West Point charge.

Bryan got the Eagles on the board 20 seconds later and stopped the Warrior onslaught. Vinemont’s offense settled in and chipped away at the West Point lead and eventually took the lead at 33-32 with 4:18 left in the half. Bryan had 26 points in the first half.

Behind the play of Mosley, Blake Gammon, Blake Mechaw and Justin Monk, the Warriors finished the half on a 15-5 run and led 47-38 going into the locker room. Mechaw had seven points off the bench in the second quarter.

Vinemont dominated the scoring in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 29-13 and led 67-60 going into the final frame. Hembree had 16 points and Corey Whittle knocked in nine, all from outsidne the arc.

West Point stormed back with key scoring from Mosley and Nick Graham to lead the Eagles 81-77 with 27 seconds remaining in the game.

Hembree scored five points late, with his final shot of regulation rolling around the rim and eventually falling to tie the game 82-82 and sending the game into overtime.

“The Vinemont kids just made some unreal shots tonight,” said West Point coach Heith Yearwood. “Vinemont made some key shots when they needed them. But, I am proud of our guys effort.”

Bryan continued his hot streak into the extra frame, scoring seven of Vinemont’s 14 points, helping his team to a frantic win. Whittle had 12 points, Zach South had nine points and Eric Chambers chipped in two for Vinemont.

West Point was led by Mosley with 28 points, Graham with 17 points, Gammon added 16 and Monk had 11. Blake Overton and Mechaw each had eight points, and Stefan Hulsey and Aaron Quick each had two.

West Point 68, Vinemont 37 (girls): The Lady Eagles may not have won in the rematch against West Point, but they did slow down West Point’s potent offense holding them to a mere 68 points.

Almost every Lady Warrior scored in the game, with West Point’s Amanda Scott and Vinemont’s Macy Bailey each with a game-high 15 points.

Scott had two quick fouls and found herself on the bench with only four minutes gone in the contest. West Point opened up with a 18-4 surge and held a seemingly-comfortable lead.

West Point’s offense then began to sputter and the Lady Eagles made a run to get back into the game, trailing 19-11 at the end of one quarter played.

Brittany Speegle added a bucket to start the second quarter and the Lady Eagles found themselves down by only seven points. But, then the wheels came off and before the smoke cleared West Point was on top to end the half 40-18.

Also scoring for the Lady Warriors was Kristi Kimbril with 13 points, Emily Blackwood had 12, and Sabrina Blackwood and Tiffany Hinkle each had eight. Lindsey Kent added five points, Nikki Cleghorn had three, and Rachel West and Celina Blackwood each chipped in two.
