The Fairview Lady Aggies saw senior Ashley Whitworth get her first action of the season, since an ankle injury sidelined her in the second game of the season against the Cold Springs Lady Eagles.
Whitworth scored eight points in the game, but it was not enough to lift Fairview past county-rival Holly Pond. The Lady Broncos (7-3) took the game 54-41.
In boys action, the Aggies outlasted a great team effort from Holly Pond to win 84-76. Ben Sellers and Kody Butts nailed the Broncos fate, hitting 16-of-20 free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter.
“Ben and Kody saved us tonight,” Fairview head coach Greg Boatright said. “Their free throw shooting in the fourth quarter saved the game for us.”
Sellers connected on all eight attempts from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, the final two put the Aggies up on top of Holly Pond 83-76. Butts and Travis Willmore had each had a team-high 22 points.
Fairview 84, Holly Pond 76 (boys): Much like the first meeting, the boys’ varsity contest went down to the wire with Fairview (8-5) topping the Broncos. In the first meeting, the Aggies edged out Holly Pond 67-64.
“This was another hard-fought contest for our guys,” said Holly Pond coach Mitch Morris said. “We had a couple of let downs and forced some shots late. It is hard to come back when you panic like that and force up shots.”
The half ended with the Aggies on top of Holly Pond 40-37. Patrick Kliegl, Daniel O’Brien and Jordan King each were in double-figure scoring in the first half for the Broncos. Kliegl finished the game with the high score of 25 points and 12 rebounds.
Kliegl scored four points coming out of the locker room and gave the Broncos their first lead, since early in the first quarter when they held a slim 10-8 advantage.
The lead was short lived, as Fairview got five straight points with a trey from Sellers and a bucket by Willmore. Holly Pond was able to tie the game two more times, with the final tie being 67-67 with 3:03 remaining in the game.
Other Fairview scorers were Sellers with 17 points, Jesse Johnson with 10 and Isaac Thomas with five. Jeremy Gilbert had four points, and Isaiah Hill and Bryce Bradshaw each chipped in two.

Holly Pond 54, Fairview 41 (girls): The Lady Broncos jumped on the visiting Fairview (2-8) team early and led 12-6 to end the first quarter. Holly Pond proceeded to dominate the Lady Aggies early in the second quarter with a 10-point surge and led 22-6.
Catie Beth Pruett nailed her second trey of the game to end the Broncos’ scoring spurt and Amanda Smith hit a jumper to end the scoring in the first half for a 22-11 Holly Pond advantage.
Savannah Ryan continued the Fairview run, coming out of the locker room with a basket underneath. Holly Pond’s Julie Taylor ends what was nearly a five-minute drought, going back to the second quarter.
