Some chance of freezing rain, snow Thursday

Cullman could see some freezing rain Thursday if temperatures drop below 32 degrees, a National Weather Service forecaster said Tuesday.

Steve Shumway in the NWS’s Huntsville office estimated a 30 percent chance of freezing rain or even light snow flurries early Thursday in Cullman.

“It looks like Thursday morning there’s a chance that rain could be frozen at times in some spots across the Tennessee Valley,” Shumway said. “It all depends on how low the low goes Thursday morning.”

Models Shumway was reviewing Tuesday predicted higher temperatures in the upper parts of the atmosphere, indicating rain would likely fall, but what kind of precipitation falls in Cullman depends on surface temperatures.

“During the day, it should be all rain,” he said. “At night, there could be some light snow flurries or maybe a drizzle. At this time, it doesn’t look like there will be any significant accumulations of anything.”

Shumway predicted surface temperatures to be warmer than freezing Thursday, but said models continue to change as new data are available.
