Etta Maudene Hudson MacNeil Pebley

Funeral services for Etta Maudene Hudson MacNeil Pebley, 94, of Falkville will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Moss-Service Funeral Home Chapel, Dr. Edwin Hayes and Pastor Daniel E. Whatley III officiating, with burial in New Hope No. 1 Cemetery on County Road 940.

Moss-Service Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pebley died Sunday, May 24, at Falkville Health Care Center with her family at her bedside. She was born May 13, 1915, in Cullman County to William Joseph and Athens Georgia Cagle Hudson.

On Nov. 17, 1943, in Cullman, Etta enlisted as a Private in the Women’s Army Corps. She worked as a tailor in the personal equipment laboratory in Wright’s Field, Ohio. PVT. First Class Etta Hudson received an honorable discharge at Fort Bragg, N.C., on Dec. 10, 1945. Her service decorations were the American Theater Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.

Etta was married in 1947 to James MacNeil of Pennsylvania, where they made their home. After Mr. MacNeil’s untimely death, Etta was married to William Curtis Pebley, who died in Pennsylvania, also. In 1966, she and her son, Jimmy, moved to Cullman County, living in the Phelan community.

As a member of First Baptist Church of Cullman, she was active with the senior adult choir, Triple Gs, and the Agape Sunday School Class. She served many years with the Cullman Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Ladies (the “Pink Ladies”), and was a member of the Bolte Homemakers Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; four brothers, Jesse John Hudson Sr., Carl Fulmer Hudson, James Delbert Hudson and Curtis W. Hudson; five sisters, Sophia Irene Hudson Crider Hancock, Nonnie Clayter Hudson Williams, Samaria Leola “Mary” Hudson Harbison, twin: Ether Paulene Hudson and Susie Mae Hudson McCain; and a grandson, John Richard MacNeil.

Survivors include a son, James Curtis “Jimmy” MacNeil of Denver, Colo.; a granddaughter, Karen Suzanne MacNeil (Brian) Rigsby of Reston, Va.; and a great-grandson, Dylan Patrick Rigsby.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the New Hope No. 1 Cemetery Fund, c/o Aubrey Hudson, 2645 County Road 998, Cullman, AL 35057; or Comfort Care Hospice of Cullman, 2035 Ala. Highway 157, Cullman, AL 35058.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
