Builders paid for work on bathrooms

Colony mayor Morris Fitts allowed The Times to see copies of payment stubs to the bank regarding the boys and girl’s bathroom project at Colony’s Vivian B. Allen Park.

The structure has been completed. The town had a matching grant for the project. They had originally budgeted $35,000 for the structure.

According to check stubs, a check to Heartland Home Builders from the town of Colony for $25,645.50 was returned due to insufficient funds, but was later paid in full.

Heartland Home Builders of Bremen was in charge of the project and NHB Group LLC, out of Birmingham was the architect.

Jason Grimmet of Heartland Home Builders said his company has been paid in full.

“They had the money,” he said. “The mayor just wasn’t sure what account it was in.”

Grimmet said he thought the mayor was just confused about where the money was because Fitts had told him the former administration told him nothing about the accounts and where the money was.

“He seems like he wanted to do what was right, but just didn’t know how to do it,” he said. “I think it was all a misunderstanding.”

Grimmet said the job is complete.

“I’m paid, and I think everybody is happy,” he said.

Fitts did not have a copy of the contract to show The Times.

“I don’t have a contract,” Fitts said. “I have been trying to get a contract ever since I’ve taken office.”

The final inspection of the bathroom was done by NHB Group on February 6.

The drawdown must be submitted by March 1 to ADECA.
