Attempted murderer sought

By Patrick McCreless

staff writer

Hanceville police are searching for a man who allegedly attempted to murder another man with a firearm Saturday on U.S. Highway 31.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. near Wallace State Community College. The victim, a 21-year-old of Blountsville, stated he was driving on Highway 31 when a silver Chevrolet pickup truck cut him off and caused him to stop.

“When he went out to see what the problem was, the suspect said ‘there is no problem,’ then pulled a handgun and shot four times and hit the victim in the leg once,” said Lt. Jimmy Rodgers of the Hanceville Police Department.

Rodgers said the victim then jumped back into his vehicle and drove to Saint Vincent Hospital in Blount County.

“He was treated and released,” Rodgers said.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and between 135 and 140 pounds. The suspect had short hair with a lightning bolt shaved in his head, sideburns down to his jaw and a goatee.

While no motive has been determined for the shooting, Rodgers said the suspect stated he had left an organized street fight shortly before the incident.

“These street fights, they’re told where to meet on the Internet ... he was there that night but he said he didn’t fight,” Rodgers said. “Someone there might have gotten mad.”

If arrested, the suspect will be charged with attempted murder and assault in the second degree.

Anyone with knowledge concerning the shooting or the identity of the suspect is encouraged to call the Hanceville Police Department at 352-9811.
