Addison school renovating gym, adding new field house

Addison High School is going through a few growing pains, but Principal Bo Bolzle said he believes it’s all for the best.
“We’re getting by as well as we can,” he said.
The school is currently in the midst of a construction project, with work being done on the campus’ main gymnasium.
“We’re adding a new lobby area and a stage area and making a new entrance on the side,” Bolzle said.
Bolzle said he is looking forward to having an auditorium area for plays and presentations.
“We’re really excited about that and the new facilities,” he said. “We haven’t really had an auditorium.”
In response to rumors the gym had been condemned, Bolzle said that is not the case.
“It’s ... just restricted from usage,” he said. “They (contractor) tore part of the wall out ... where they’re putting the new project in. They asked to not let anyone in for safety reasons while work is ongoing.”
Johnson Contractors of Muscle Shoals are handling the project, which is being paid for with funds from a recent state bond.
A completion date for the project has not been set, though Bolzle said he hopes to have the gym reopened in November.
With the main gymnasium off limits, physical education classes have been moved to the campus’ other gym.
“We’re holding those in our dome gym on campus,” Bolzle said. “Just having both boys and girls PE classes in that facility. Doing what we have to do to get by.”
Many at-home games for the volleyball team have already been rescheduled, and a basketball tournament set to be hosted at Addison has been moved to Lynn High School.
In addition to the work on the gym, Bolzle said the school also plans to build a new field house with the bond money.
“We’re getting that (gym renovations) and a new field house out of that,” Bolzle said.
