Investigators suspect an arsonist was responsible for a fire that destroyed a Cullman home Saturday evening.

According to Cullman County Sheriff’s reports, the incident occurred between 4 and 11 p.m. at a brick house on County Road 1117. The owner was not present at the time.

“When the fire department got on scene, they said the fire was already in the walls and the attic,” said Lt. Phillip Lambert of the sheriff’s office. “The house was totally destroyed.”

Lambert said he did not know what was the official cause of the fire.

“The fire marshal is still evaluating the cause,” he said. “He’s checking to see if any accelerants were used.”

Nobody was injured during the fire and no suspects have been listed at this time. Further information about the case was unavailable.

Anyone arrested for the crime will be charged with arson in the second degree, which is a Class B felony and punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
